Truth in advertising: I always wondered what it would be like to hike out of the Copper Canyon in a pounding rainstorm. When Ami (the grinning beard on the far right) challenged me to show a photo of our dripping group, this was the result. (Carl Franz, guide, in front.)

The Tarahumara in this area have come to know us by now, though they still tend to keep their distance. Our main interaction is on our final day on the trail, when we meet at a ranch below the canyon rim. It has become a tradition to end our trek by purchasing baskets, wood carvings, seed necklaces and other small crafts from the local women. This is an important infusion of cash into their households -- and a good opportunity to satisfy our mutual curiosity. |
